Aftercare
Do what now?
If you have more than one tattoo, you have been told more than one way to heal your tattoo.
There is not a standardized education regarding tattoo care.
The rules or limitations are put in place by Health Departments, which can range from city to county, or state. Sometimes being a combination of one or more.
So I suggest a simple reminder: K3 (like K2 the mountain - don’t be a jerk).
Keep It Clean
Keep It Dry
Keep It Moisturized
Now if you can use Saniderm, Derm Shield, Second Skin or other long term bandages, there is a whole world of difference.
You can explore more about them by clicking on the link below:
Long-Term Bandages
Keep it Clean
So simple. Wash it, with soap, your hand and running water. Temperature does not matter beyond what you find comfortable.
Rinse completely.
Keep it Dry
Once clean, dry the area with a clean paper towel or towel. Don’t rub vigorously, patting is kinder.
Allow it to airdry for a few minutes.
Keep it Moisturized
Not as tricky as it sounds - an ointment is ideal for the first few days. Lotion when the skin starts to peel.
It should be applied very thin, barely more than a lotion.
Products
There are so many products out there. I encourage everyone to be discerning when choosing what they use.
Everyone’s skin is different and preferences vary. So people use different soaps, different shampoos, different lotions.
The same applies to tattoos.
Here is a list some of the products out there that have had positive results over the years with artists and clients. It is not comprehensive.
The best course of action, however is to follow a rule I call The BS Rule (Yep, I’m seriously derpy).
The BS Rule
It’s easy… maybe too easy.
If it BURNS or STINGS wash it off and try something else.
That’s it.
If you opt out of the long term bandages, this is your go to.
It doesn’t matter if its soap, ointment, lotion, water temperature - if it Burns or Stings on the tattoo, wash it off immediately.
Give your skin time to calm down, try something else on a small section of the tattoo (a good rule as well, but I don’t have a catchy anagram for it).
